I am so grateful for my non-work vocation! I cannot refer to what I do as "work", because that word has such a negative connotation in our society! I enjoy my Mentoring partnership with the adults and students with whom I choose to spend my time, Monday through Friday, for seven-week blocks! I get to think of fun, creative ways to learn; I get to help resolve conflict in a compassionate and thoughtful manner; I never have to punish, yell, or threaten, or refer to "good" vs. "bad"; I get to be loving and kind!
The past few weeks, I have a had a conflict with a co-worker, that stemmed from misunderstanding and miscommunication.
In a "normal" work environment, this would have a) been ignored and left to fester, b) involved back-biting and gossip, c) been resolved by manipulation or power struggles, or d) never resolved. Instead, we held a "restorative circle" and had an NVC mediator come in and coach us through a peaceful resolution that ended with a hug! One of the other aspects of "this-thing-I choose-to -do-that-others-call-work" I love, is our NVC process and training: NVC is Non-Violent Communication, created by Marshall Rosenberg; the process to facilitate healthy and cooperative communication that is based in empathy. We receive this training once per month and also use it to help resolve conflict between the students!
I am so lucky to be part of this process; my 'non-work' is truly a gift!
